Layering

Layering in oil painting is the technique of applying multiple transparent or semi-transparent layers of paint on top of each other, allowing artists to create depth, dimension, and complexity in their artwork. By carefully considering opacity and transparency of pigments, artists can achieve a wide range of effects, preserve lost lines, control chroma, and enhance luminosity and richness in their paintings. Glazing, a form of layering, involves applying thin, transparent layers over dried layers to add depth and subtle shifts in color. Overall, layering is a fundamental technique that brings life, realism, and vibrancy to oil paintings.. You can watch my video tutorial below.
